Serving is the first step to true greatness.
Jesus said that there were two great commandments; the first was to love the Lord with all your heart, soul, and mind, and the second Jesus said was like the first, “to love your neighbor as yourself.” (Matthew 22:36-39) As part of God’s family we have been given a call to serve everyone we can. So, we do it by going out of our comfort zones and engaging people where they are. Whether it is handing out burgers downtown, raking leaves for senior citizens, or painting a single mother’s home, we serve because we believe that God has put us on Earth to impact our community.
Access has many great programs and opportunities in place to get people connected by serving. A few are:
- Access also offers a great opportunity to engage in missions work at a relatively low cost. We are taking a team to New York City from June 11-18. The trip filled up quickly, but there will be more opportunities in the future, so keep serving, keep preparing, and get on board for the next one! Contact Dan or Jennifer with questions at 261-3765.
- Since Katrina struck in 2005, we have taken teams down several times each year to assist with rebuilding efforts. In the spring of 2008, after a group of Access students went to the Dominican Republic, God placed a three-year-old little girl who needed a bone marrow transplant on the hearts of our community members. Together, as a family, we were able to raise the money needed for the surgery and show God’s immeasurable love to a family in need.
- The Crew is back in action! Dan is going to be leading the team into the community every sixth Saturday from 9 am -2 pm doing clean-up, helping people in need, and putting our love into action. Lunch is on us, so sign up at Access, and then come serve with us We will be heading out this Saturday, April 25th, and then June 6, July 18, August 29, October 20, and November 21. Check the calendar for more details!
- Access @ Streetlight: Jenn Christensen leads a team of Access students to serve at Streetlight every fourth Saturday of the month. They meet at Streetlight @ 515 S. Division at 5, and serve until 9. A night of serving could include interacting with people in the hot food line, hearing someone’s story as you sit down to eat with them, or stopping to pray with someone downtown with your street team. Ask Jenn or stop by the info table at Access with questions.
- We also have the awesome task of serving others each week during an Access service:
- Greeting
- Info table
- Prayer team
- Set-up and tear down
- Coffee bar and grill
- Connecting new attendees
